Do you read the book Hatchet with your students? This living literature lesson is designed to compliment student’s experience when reading the book Hatchet by Gary Paulsen. In this packet, the instructor will find easy to follow instruction about how to introduce the survival skills Brian uses, how to teach them in context, and how to relate them back to the book. Throughout the activity, students will reference the book in order to understand Brian’s experience, and then put specific skills into practice. It provides your students the chance to actually live a small piece of Brian’s experience. Additionally, this lesson has been designed to meet Nebraska State Standards, and Common Core National Standards. This lesson takes approximately three hours to complete, or can easily be broken up to fit three, one-hour time slots. If you read Hatchet with your students, this lesson is an excellent way to increase your student’s understanding of the text, provide them with experiences for their own writing, and teach them about the outdoors. This lesson is definitely a kid favorite! LESSON ONLY. This item does not include the fire kit in the lesson, but includes ordering list with Amazon ASIN numbers.
